yam
The Chinese yam root (Chinese wild yam) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. It is sometimes used as a tonic to regulate menstrual cycles and for menstrual-related complaints. The regulating effect is due to the ingredient diosgenin, a precursor to the natural hormone progesterone. With the onset of menopause, this hormone decreases, which can lead to symptoms. Diosgenin is also said to increase bone stability and stimulate the production of the hormone DHEA, which is responsible for slowing the aging process.
