Miliacin in combination with polar lipids: Effect on growth factor secretion and the extracellular matrix in the dermal papilla of the hair follicle model under survival conditions*
A study investigated how miliacin, in combination with polar lipids (MPL), stimulates cell activity in the hair bulb over a period of 7 days. Human scalp hair follicles were cultured under survival conditions. The effects on collagen and glycosaminoglycans in the dermal papilla, cell division of keratinocytes in the hair bulb, and the release of the growth factors IGF1 and KGF were analyzed.
Results: Miliacin, acting in conjunction with polar lipids, influences the dermal papilla by stimulating the production of the growth factor IGF-1 and promoting the renewal of keratinocytes in the hair root. It also increases the thickness of the extracellular matrix of the connective tissue sheaths.

A placebo-controlled, multicenter, randomized, double-blind study in 65 nonmenopausal women with telogen effluvium to evaluate the efficacy of 12 weeks of oral supplementation with MePL (miliacin encapsulated in polar lipids).
Results : In clinical trials, miliacin supplementation significantly reduced the telogen phase and improved scalp dryness and hair conditions (Keophiphath et al., 2020). Efficacy of a wheat polar lipid complex (WPLC) in reducing hair loss and promoting hair growth in healthy women*
A randomized, placebo-controlled, 84-day study evaluating the efficacy of WPLC by assessing hair in the anagen/telogen phase, measuring hair loss, determining hair diameter and elongation at break, hair growth, and scalp sebum content. Hair density and volume were also clinically assessed.
Wheat Polar Lipid Complex (WPLC) is a wheat-derived active ingredient containing polar lipids. These lipid compounds possess bioactive properties that have been linked to hair health benefits in clinical studies. WPLC is widely used in dietary supplements to promote hair growth, reduce hair loss, and improve scalp conditions. Its action is based on the combination of lipids with bioactive substances such as miliacin, which stimulate cell proliferation in the hair root and strengthen the structural integrity of the hair.
Results : WPLC supplementation significantly reduced hair density in the telogen phase and increased it in the anagen phase after just 56 days compared to placebo. It reduced hair loss (tensile test) and improved hair growth , breakage resistance, density, and volume after 84 days, as well as scalp sebum levels in oily hair. Positive effects were also observed in postmenopausal women. Participants reported an improved perception of their hair condition. Overall, WPLC demonstrated a significant reduction in hair loss and promoted hair growth.
